Comprehensive cooperation protocol was signed between the Near East University and Istanbul University
The Near East University and Istanbul University signed a mutual cooperation protocol envisaging “Common Diploma Programs” in the field of “Open and Distance Learning” within the framework of the regulations.
According the press release from the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the Near East University, Istanbul University Rector Prof. Dr. Yunus Söylet along with his delegation, the Near East University Founding Rector Dr. Suat İ. Günsel, NEU Rector Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan, NEU Board of Trustees Chairman Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel, vice rectors and faculty members participated in the signing ceremony.
In his opening remarks, NEU Rector Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan touched upon the importance of such a protocol and spoke of: “Undoubtedly, it is an important day for us in all aspects. As a precious medical scientist and lecturer who reminds Turkey and TRNC the principles to be followed in an ethical context, Istanbul University Rector Prof. Dr. Yunus Söylet is among us to live the pride of establishing a full cooperation with NEU. We are living the outcome of the intellectual work discipline and moral unity between our Founding Rector Dr. Suat İ. Günsel and Prof. Dr. Yunus Söylet. This cooperation was established within mind and heart synthesis in an objective manner. Its volume and nuances will technically and scientifically show itself within the frame covering the topics that each university is specialized in” said he.
Taking the stage Istanbul University Rector Prof. Dr. Yunus Söylet said: “”Today we are experiencing an exciting phase of a continuation of a previously existing togetherness actually. As Istanbul University, we have established this cooperation with TRNC’s most long-established university; the Near University that we are also proud of it. We have come together to determine the road map for our steps from now on in a more systematic and rule-bound manner. The protocol is aimed at actions towards more open learning environments to deliver education of higher quality and efficacy and thus contributing to the future goals of boosting competitiveness and growth by investing in our young people. “Common Diploma Programs” in the field of Open and Distance Learning is the first and the most important step of the frame protocol that we are signing today. We will give momentum for our efforts for offering programs particularly in English within Open and Distance Learning scope for international students. We will also accelerate our efforts to open new exchange programs for researchers and academic staff. All these will be carried out in a more systematic manner within the context of the curriculum and information exchange”.
Söylet: “In addition to these, Foreign Students Examination (YÖS), which is held in approximately 25 countries by Istanbul University, will be performed in TRNC for the first time with the support of the Near East University”.
Stating that students are placed to more than 50 universities in Turkey through YÖS that performed by İstanbul University, Prof. Söylet underlined that they would also hold YÖS in TRNC with NEU from then on.
Touching upon the crucial role of Open and Distance Learning in delivering the accumulation of knowledge of the universities to all parts of society exceeding their boundaries without depending on time and place, Professor Söylet stated that he considered it very important to equip the educators with educational technologies so as to keep with evolving technology and information age. “Through this protocol, Istanbul University and the Near East University aim to play a unique role in society, making Higher Education open to all and lead the learning revolution, placing innovation at the heart of our teaching and research” said he.
Underlining the specific feature of Open and Distance Learning in bringing many innovations to the whole of the universities as well as making it easy to mingle with information technologies, Professor Söylet noted: “Open and Distance Learning provides opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to access education all over the world, That is, it promotes educational opportunity by providing high-quality university education to all who wish to realize their ambitions and fulfill their potential. Through Open and Distance Learning, People can update their skills, get a qualification, boost their career, change direction, and prove themselves. Being aware the importance of open and distance learning, Istanbul University first launched Distance Education Program in 2009 and then founded Open and Distance Education Faculty in 2010.
Our faculty received approval from both the Assembly and YÖK”.
In his remarks he referred to NEU Founding Rector Günsel by saying “As Istanbul University, which has a long established tradition as historical and cumulative, we continuously seek new and better ways to inspire and enable learning. We aim to reach outside of Turkey with a number of established international partnerships and thousands of international students studying. While thinking if there is a leading university that stands out with its equality education and a university founder with a forward looking vision, just at this point, I have realized that I actually know him”.
Professor Söylet: “The Near East University is the most powerful university of TRNC”
Emphasizing the Near East University as the most powerful university in TRNC, Professor Söylet noted: “We are taking an important step here today. From now on, we have a responsibility to fill in this and achieve success stories. I have no doubt that both universities will do their best to accomplish perfect results. Our primary effort through this protocol will be aimed at helping students achieve their study goals. I hope, we conduce toward to cultivate students who are equipped with information and skills that enable them to think like a super computer and to be beneficial to their countries and our world”.
Following the speeches, the parties signed the protocol mutually. NEU Founding Rector Dr. Suat İ. Günsel presented a plaque to IU Rector Prof. Dr. Yunus Söylet in memory of the day that represents the beginning of unity. The participants also presented various gifts each other, and the signing ceremony ended.
